The Transit Committee oversees the delivery of quality public transit services which support the economic vitality and environmental integrity of the Region. Under the direction of the Transit Committee and the Rapid Transit Public-Private Partnership Committee, many initiatives were brought forward.

ENHANCING SERVICE
Focus: Facilitate and enhance Regional transit service for a wide variety of customers..
Achievements:
Enhanced York Region Transit (YRT) fleet with the addition of 12 conventional and 3 specialized low-floor vehicles.
Transit improvements increased the average weekday transit usage to 55,000 passengers yielding the highest annual ridership since the inception of YRT in 2001.
In 2004, YRT achieved a 50.2% revenue/cost ratio.
Constructed and completed a brand new transit terminal at Vaughan Mills Mall to accommodate visitors and employees.
Continued participation in the GTA Smart Card initiative with neighbouring transit providers, including GO Transit.
  PROMOTION AND AWARENESS
Focus: Promote the use of public transit to help reduce traffic congestion and harmful emissions.
Achievements:
Participated in more than 40 community events in 2004.
Developed an integrated marketing plan for YRT and the Viva bus rapid transit service.
Implemented numerous improvement initiatives resulting from the conventional and specialized Customer Satisfaction Surveys conducted in 2003.

VIVA

Focus: Continue to work towards providing York Region residents with a rapid transit system that is convenient and accessible.
Achievements:
Secured $150 million from York Region, the Government of Ontario and Government of Canada to fund the rapid transit initial phase.
Introduced the Viva Marketing and Communications Plan that was approved by the Rapid Transit Steering Committee and Regional Council.

Began construction on bus bays and platforms, receiving and queue jump lanes, shelter pads and the Richmond Hill Terminal at Highway 7 and Yonge Street.

Began installation of traffic signal priority equipment to allow the Viva vehicles to move through intersections more quickly.

Purchased the north operations and maintenance facility in Newmarket for Viva vehicles.

Assembled and approved the Viva vehicle prototypes.

Approved, ordered and purchased 85 Viva vehicles.

Received approval from the Rapid Transit Steering Committee and Regional Council to create and implement the Viva Ambassador Program to promote the new rapid transit service.

Finalized and approved the Viva Station concept and design.

Began coordinating fare media and training efforts with YRT for roll out and implementation of rapid transit service in fall 2005.


Approved, ordered and purchased 85 Viva vehicles.
Began construction on bus bays and platforms, receiving and queue jump lanes, shelter pads and the Richmond Hill Terminal at Highway 7 and Yonge Street.
Developed and launched the new rapid transit brand, Viva and the Viva Web site, which received world-wide recognition for innovation.
